News from outside the Park

Fire in the palm oil plantation
Yesterday evening Kumai harbour was like New Year eve, the sky was red bright. Later I found out it was from fire in a palm oil plantation. It is located across the river from the Park but still some orangutans live there.  I just hope it won’t reach the river banks because since many palm oil plantation company invested their money there, the orangutan were pushed to the river bank.  Poor orangutans, I believe if they could fight for themselves they would be demonstrating in the President’s office to stop opening forest for palm plantations and to get their home back. Maybe…

Ah almost

The day before yesterday I stayed overnight in Beguruh to help to make fire line around the nursery area close to the post. It was a scary situation.  I could see many dancing fire. We were in the safe place from big fire but the smoke was so heavy, if the condition was like that for a long time we would have been died, not from the fire but from the smoke.. We almost decided to go, we sent the cook and the foreigner volunteer back home to the main post, worried if something bad happened, but we, the Management team and the reforestation staff stayed. We were lucky, after a while wind blew the smoke away, and we continued working.
